The MWRA is seeking a Metal Fabricator/Welder to fabricate and repair metal parts; weld, cut and install metal parts of equipment; lay out sketches and read blueprints; rig equipment and perform preventive maintenance on plant equipment.
The work includes fabricating, cutting forms, welding, assembling and installing metal parts of equipment in conformance with drawings, plans or instructions through the use of machine, tool, bench or hand work as required; assembling and disassembling scaffolding, staging, flooring and grating; setting-up and operating hand, electric and air-operated tools, hydraulic jacks and hoists using oxyacetylene and electric arc welding equipment for fabrication, repair or alteration to machinery; sketching work to be completed and interpreting existing blueprints to estimate size of parts needed; performing preventive maintenance on pumps, generators, valves, turbines, gates and gate assemblies and related equipment; rigging equipment to be moved using cranes and hoists with lift straps and/or chains; evaluating equipment, reporting damage and unsafe conditions and recommending maintenance program requirements and; performing light maintenance independently or as part of a team. Light maintenance shall include but not limited to: inspecting and troubleshooting various systems and equipment; installing and retrofitting/new equipment related to plant systems; modifying and/or aligning existing equipment to specifications; with proper training setting up ladders, staging and rigging and utilizes hoists, jacks, dollies, lifts, etc. for proper access to job and to remove and install equipment; operating portable pumping and/or ventilation equipment to prepare a work area for access; opening hatches; installing safety rails; routine testing, lockout/tagout, operation (startup/shutdown) and adjustment of process equipment and; removing snow from immediate work area.
The position requires a high school education or the equivalent; one (1) year certificate from college or technical school; three (3) to six (6) years metal trades apprenticeship or related experience; and a valid driver’s license.
