Job Description
Position Summary and Purpose:  Set up and operate CNC controlled lathe that automatically performs machining operations such as turning, boring, facing, milling, drilling, and tapping on 3rd axis metal or non-metallic work pieces
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Receive work assignment; secure drawings, set-up sketch, program and tool list
  • Place work piece on machine manually or with aid of crane or hoist, clamp piece to machine using chucks, face plate, tail stock, or fixtures
  • Set up piece making close measurements to level and align work, adjust to proper coordinates according to program
  • Download CNC program and install appropriate tools, adjust coolant and observe machine operation
  • Check workpiece dimensions and adjust as required; report any program errors or malfunctions, and make and upload necessary edits
  • Remove work piece from machine, stamp as required; debur all work
  • Perform very close machining operations such as turning, boring, facing, forming, etc. on such parts as shafts, adjusting screws, ball sockets, shear flywheels, clutches and others of related complexity
  • Occasionally performs a manual operation such as polishing by manipulating buttons, switches, or handwheels
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area and perform all assignments in a safe manner and in accordance with established quality procedures
Education and Experience:
  • High School diploma or certificate of equivalency
  • 2 years prior machining experience
  • Technical school certificate
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Characteristics, etc.
  • Ability to read and interpret prints
  • Must know GD&T
  • Excellent math skills
  • Attention to detail

  • Understanding of machine programming with ability to interpret and edit is preferred
  • Ability to use micrometers and gauges is preferred
  • PC skills are preferred
Tools, Technology and Equipment Used:  NC lathe, fixtures, face plates, mandrels, chucks, various cutting tools, gauges and other precision measuring devices, remote overhead crane or hoist, machinist’s hand tools, hydraulic steady rest
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand. This position is active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, reaching with hands and arms and climbing ladders. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and to climb or balance.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions. The noise level in the work environment can be loud at times. The employee must regularly lift, move and carry up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
