Fabrication Shop Technician I

General Summary:
Fabricates assorted metal products using various raw materials and tool. Reading and understanding assembly instructions, ensuring that the required parts are present and meeting quality control standards. Responsible for maintaining high productivity and constantly strives to improve processes.
Essential Functions:
1. Performs any combination of preparing, joining, welding, storing, cleaning, and inspecting steel and aluminum components prior to installation by:
Grinding, sanding, and smoothing surfaces using power tools and hand tools.
Priming and preparing metal for powder coating.
Cleaning work areas, using air hoses, in order to remove damaged material and discarded fiberglass.
Read and interpret project plans, blueprints and other written instructions and diagrams to perform task at hand
Perform MIG and other types of weld based on project needs
Field install welds, including duct work, light fixtures, vents, fans, metal sheeting and other part
Set up components for welding according to specifications (e.g. cut material with powered saws to match measurements)
Operate angle grinders to prepare the parts that must be welded
Align components using calipers, rulers etc. and clamp pieces
Weld components using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment in various positions (vertical, horizontal, or overhead)
2. Ensure the quality of all components by:
Maintaining and improving the quality of parts produced.
Interpreting blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
Complying with all work instructions.
Verifying the finish, cut, and shape of required components.
Thoroughly examining materials and products for defects.
3. Ensure the operational effectiveness of all assigned equipment by:
Conducting all assigned and necessary preventative maintenance procedures.
Starting and observing machine operations to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
Installing replacement parts in equipment and testing operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance.
Conferring with engineers, production personnel, or others to resolve machining problems.
4. Responsible for support all High Altitude quality and manufacturing processes by:
Maintaining and continuously improving productivity of assigned machines.
Measuring, marking, and scribing dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent assembly.
Continuously looking at tool life and new tooling to cut costs on tools.
Reducing downtime of machines setups
Suggesting improvements to High Altitude’s processes and practices.
Unloading materials from cars, trucks, and trailers by hand, using hand truck, or industrial truck to move material to designated areas.
5. Contributes to the overall effectiveness of the company by:
Channeling problems and/or complaints to appropriate person for resolution.
Supporting all High Altitude Trailer Co policies and procedures.
Reporting to Supervisor when assignments cannot be completed.
Providing input and assistance with the implementation of quality improvements.
Resolving problems.
Performing other job-related duties as required.
Training new personnel in the operation of assigned machines.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
1. Requires physical ability and stamina to perform the essential functions of the position, including the ability to walk, stand, lift, carry up to 50 pounds, push, kneel, bend, stoop, reach over and under waist level, twist for extended periods of time on cement or other hard surfaces, etc.
2. Demonstrates the verbal and written communication skills necessary to complete forms and use work instructions.
3. Two plus years of experience
4. Ability to use MIG and other types of welding equipment.
5. Ability to use basic hand tools including angle grinder, miter saw, and tape measure.
6. Ability to read, understand, and interpret blueprints.
7. Ability to wear a respirator for extended periods of time.
8. Must be able to communicate in English.
9. Ability to use a computer or smart phone.
Working Conditions:
1. Non-Air conditioned and heated manufacturing facility with possible exposure to noise; dust; fumes; physical, chemical, and biohazards; solvents, oils, and detergents.
